Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an infection of the gums which leads to bone loss surrounding the teeth. The primary cause of periodontal disease is the presence of bacteria due to a buildup of dental plaque. Other causes of periodontal disease include smoking and poorly controlled diabetes.
Excellent oral hygiene is the number one way to prevent periodontal disease. However, active periodontal disease needs to be treated in the dental office to prevent further progression and loss of bone. We treat periodontal disease first with scaling and root planing, or deep cleaning. During a deep cleaning, your hygienist will provide local anesthetic so that your tissues are numb. Then, scaling and root planing will be performed to remove the harmful bacteria and tartar from your gums and root surfaces. Subsequently, maintenance visits at frequent intervals will help to prevent progression of periodontal disease.
